Spring bursts forth hopeful for thousands of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania adoptees who hope to obtain their original birth certificates.
As ancient adoption rules and perceptions get a proper lashing in mainstream movies, books and television shows, the legal landscape for adoptees is also changing. For the first time in decades, society seems to be moving away from fear, and towards understanding that it is every human’s right to know their genetic, historic and social identity.
At this very moment, there are three equal access bills proposed in influential northern U.S. states. These include:
- New Jersey Adoptee’s Birthright Bill
- New York Assembly bill 909/Senate bill 2490A
- Pennsylvania House Bill HB 162
To get these adoption bills signed into law, interested adoptees MUST take action NOW. You must write, call and be vocal about your support for equal access. In order to hasten participation by adoptees, here are the links to action sites in NJ, NY and PA.
These groups/links offer specific steps that you can take today to help adoptees in your state (or state of adoption) get equal access.
- Adoptees Rights Coalition (active in all three states)
- New Jersey Care
- New York Statewide Adoption’s UNSEALED initiative
- Pennsylvania Adoptees Rights (PAR)
WE CAN DO IT Adoptionfind readers! Please act today.
Blessings for legislative action and equal access,
Vicki-lynn
I am thrilled that todays politicians are breaking the mold of past laws to free adoptees from the silence to now learn who they really are. Even when adopted under the best of conditions, and even if the adult-child relationship is good; a non-kinship infant never fully assimilates into an adopted family. It just does not happen…ever. Changing these laws as they currently stand is an ethical practice, for it will raise the bar on preserving the mental health of family’s in our nation. And its about time.
